Advanced Stages

In my series "Advanced Stages," I delve into the profound and heart-wrenching journey of experiencing advanced dementia or Alzheimer's through the lens of a close family member who suffers from this cruel affliction. They described the sensation of their fading memories as being trapped behind a mask, obscured by fog, with their thoughts and recollections pinned down by unseen forces. It's this vivid, haunting imagery that I sought to capture and convey through my work, using a crafted mask adorned with brass pins to symbolize the constriction and imprisonment of one's identity and memories.

Through a series of photographs that blend the raw physicality of my loved one's movements with the ethereal quality of time-lapse imagery, I strive to visualize the tumultuous internal struggle of living with Alzheimer's. The physical movements I replicated in these images—gestures of frustration, confusion, and the desperate yearning for clarity—speak to the universal experience of those grappling with the disease. These are not just poses but embody the daily reality for my family member, translated into visual form. The time-lapsed images serve to create fuzzy impressions, akin to the blurred and overlapping memories that haunt those in the advanced stages of dementia, each frame layered upon the next, illustrating the relentless progression of the disease and the fight to maintain a grasp on oneself.
